Explain the iconoclastic controversy. Why were abstract symbols widely used?

The conflict which began with an edict promulgated by the Byzantine emperor Leo III in 726 prohibiting religious images, it insisted on a literal interpretation of the biblical ban against graven images because their use led to idolatry.

The Iconoclastic Controversy is not being allowed to depict an icon within a culture of the culture's own religious icons and other symbols or monuments, usually for religious or political motives. It is a frequent component of major domestic political or religious changes, also known as Iconoclasm.
