The crusades were military campaigns that began in the 1100's that was originally used to recapture the holy land of Jerusalem from Muslim control, which later became tools for the church to combat opposing religions, nations and internal turmoil; efficiently giving power to Christian Europe.

the crusades were a series of conflicts perpetuated by christian European countries that began in late 1000 and lasted nearly 300 years, causing the death and destruction of numerous non-christian areas. primarily due to religious intolerance but also largely related to political and economical turmoil, the 'christians' attacked Muslims, pagans, and even political enemies of the Pope. initially, Papal decree was required to begin an official crusade, but into later years they got so bloodthirsty that they went off into battle under the delusion of crusading without even that minor facade of righteousness.
originally the idea was to recapture Jerusalem from middle-eastern rule, but with all the terrorising, who remembers these things?
and i hate them.

The origins of the Crusades lie in developments in Western Europe earlier in the Middle Ages, as well as the deteriorating situation of the Byzantine Empire in the east caused by a new wave of Turkish Muslim attacks. The breakdown of the Carolingian Empire in the late 9th century, combined with the relative stabilization of local European borders after the Christianization of the Vikings, Slavs, and Magyars, had produced a large class of armed warriors whose energies were misplaced fighting one another and terrorizing the local populace.

The crusades were a period when Christian Europe held conflicts against the internal and external threats of non-christians. the crusaders were given vows that allowed them passage of previous sins.
