What is a pilgrimage church? How and why did they develop?

Pilgrimage churches can be found on common pilgrimage routes. The often held relics and were built in an attempt to convert pagans to Christianity.

Although many great churches were places of pilgrimage. The Cathedrals of Canterbury and Lincoln because of the Relics contained therein St Thomas of Canterbury and St Hugh respectively, the term is especially given to those churches on pilgrimage-routes. They were used to everybody to Chistianity.
